A wide pleated shade, and light that has to come through it

Most small lamps point their light somewhere. This one does not: the bulb sits under a 25 cm cone of pleated fabric, so nothing reaches the room until it has passed through cloth. What comes out is soft, spread wide and slightly uneven, because each fold catches a different amount. It is the oldest trick in domestic lighting and it still works better than any setting on a phone app.

A flat shade gives you one even wash.
