The patio light that is really about the wall behind it

Most outdoor lights are built to light a path. This one is built to be looked at. It is a small iron teardrop, pierced all over with scrolls, little flowers and fleur-de-lis shapes in the style of a Moroccan lantern, and when it glows the pattern escapes through the holes and lands on the nearest wall, table or shrub as a scatter of warm shapes. Hang it on the veranda, from a pergola beam or from a branch over the outdoor table, and that corner stops being dark and starts being somewhere to sit. A mood light, not a floodlight.

☀️ Charged by the day, lit by the evening
The black cap at the top carries a small solar panel and hangs on its own wire handle. A thin cord runs down from the cap to the lantern. During the day the panel charges one AA rechargeable battery (NiMH, 1.2 V, 800 mAh), and after dark that battery runs the light. There is no plug, no charging lead and nothing to run along a fence to a socket.

💡 Soft on purpose
The light is warm white and gentle: about 15 lumens. That is enough to throw the pattern onto a wall or a table close by and to see the glass in your hand. It is not enough to light steps or read by, and it is not meant to be. If you need a path light, this is the wrong lamp. If you want the corner of the garden to look like somewhere, it is the right one.

It is rated IP55: protected against dust, and against water splashed or sprayed at it from any direction. Rain, a hose and the sprinkler are all covered, so it can hang outside through the season instead of coming in every time the sky turns.

The lantern is about 10 cm across, and from the top of the handle to the pointed tip the whole thing is about 60 cm long. It weighs about 300 grams. The bottom comes to a point, so it hangs rather than stands: a hook, a branch, a pergola beam or a garden crook all work. None of those come with it, so choose the spot first.

  1. Give it a sunny day first. Hang it in full sun for a whole day before its first evening, so the battery starts full.
  2. Hang the cap where it sees the sky. The panel is in the cap, so the cap needs daylight. The lantern hangs below it on the cord.
  3. Wait for dark. The pattern only shows once the light around it drops, so it is at its best from dusk on.
